Itinerary

Waqrapukara – The horn-shaped sanctuary of the Andes
  • Cusco – The Journey Begins: We will begin our experience with an early departure from Cusco, traveling south through the Andean landscapes toward the province of Acomayo.
  • As we leave the city behind, the scenery gradually changes into wide valleys, agricultural fields, traditional communities, and high-altitude mountain landscapes.
  • We will make a stop along the route for breakfast before continuing toward the starting point of our hike.
  • Pitumarca Area – Beginning of the Hike: Upon arrival at the starting point, we will prepare for our hike toward Waqrapukara.
  • The trail takes us through peaceful Andean landscapes, surrounded by mountains and open valleys. The route gradually becomes more dramatic as we approach the canyon where Waqrapukara is located.
  • The hike requires a moderate level of physical effort, particularly because of the altitude and uneven terrain. We will maintain a comfortable pace, allowing enough time to enjoy the scenery along the way.
  • Waqrapukara – The Horn-Shaped Sanctuary: After completing the hike, we will finally reach Waqrapukara, an impressive archaeological complex built on top of a natural rock formation.
  • Its name comes from the Quechua words waqra, meaning "horn," and pukara, meaning "fortress," referring to its distinctive shape.
  • From the site, we can appreciate spectacular views over the surrounding canyon and the distant mountains. The combination of archaeological structures, enormous cliffs, and the vast Andean landscape makes Waqrapukara a truly unique destination.
  • We will have time to explore the site, learn about its historical and ceremonial significance, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere before beginning our return journey.
  • Return Along the Andean Trail: After visiting Waqrapukara, we will begin our descent along the same trail.
  • The return journey provides a different perspective of the landscape, with wide views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
  • Once we reach the starting point, our transportation will be waiting for us. We will then stop for lunch before beginning our journey back to Cusco.
  • Return to Cusco: After lunch, we will continue our journey through the southern highlands of Cusco.
  • We will arrive in the city in the afternoon or evening, depending on weather and road conditions, concluding an adventurous day surrounded by some of the most spectacular landscapes of the Peruvian Andes.
