Sillustani half day – Ancient tombs above the lake

Description

Half day
Puno, Peru

On a windswept peninsula surrounded by the calm waters of Lake Umayo, ancient stone towers rise above the Altiplano. These monumental structures, known as chullpas, were built as funerary monuments and continue to reveal the sophistication and beliefs of the societies that once inhabited the region.

A half-day visit to Sillustani takes us beyond the monuments themselves. It is an opportunity to explore an extraordinary archaeological landscape where carefully carved stone, ancient burial traditions and the vastness of the Peruvian highlands come together.

Itinerary

Sillustani half day – Ancient tombs above the lake
  • Puno – The Journey Begins: We begin our half-day experience in Puno, leaving the city behind as we travel through the landscapes of the Altiplano toward the archaeological complex of Sillustani.
  • Along the way, we can appreciate the characteristic scenery of southern Peru, with open plains, agricultural fields and traditional rural communities surrounded by the high Andean mountains.
  • Our guide will introduce us to the history of the region and explain the cultural importance of Sillustani before we arrive at the archaeological site.
  • Sillustani Archaeological Complex – A Sacred Landscape: Upon arrival, we enter the Sillustani archaeological complex, located on a peninsula overlooking Lake Umayo.
  • The combination of the ancient monuments, the open highland landscape and the lake creates an impressive setting. The site was used as a funerary complex, where important members of ancient societies were laid to rest.
  • As we walk through the area, our guide will explain the traditions and beliefs associated with these ancient burial practices and their relationship with the surrounding landscape.
  • The Chullpas – Towers of Stone and Memory: The most remarkable feature of Sillustani is its collection of chullpas, large stone funerary towers built by pre-Inca societies and later associated with the wider cultural traditions of the Altiplano.
  • Some of these structures reach several meters in height and demonstrate sophisticated masonry techniques. Their carefully fitted stones reflect the importance given to these monuments and to the people who were buried within them.
  • The guide will explain the theories surrounding their construction, the burial traditions of the region and the characteristics that make Sillustani one of the most distinctive archaeological sites near Puno.
  • The Lake Umayo Viewpoint – The Landscape of the Altiplano: From the archaeological complex, we can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Umayo and the surrounding highland landscape.
  • The calm waters of the lake contrast with the dry, open terrain of the Altiplano, creating a peaceful setting around the ancient monuments.
  • This is also an ideal moment to appreciate the relationship between the archaeological site and its natural environment, as well as to take photographs of the landscape.
  • Local Communities and Andean Traditions: Depending on the day's conditions and route, the journey may also provide an opportunity to observe traditional rural communities and local ways of life around the Puno region.
  • Agriculture, livestock and long-standing Andean customs continue to be part of everyday life in the Altiplano, creating an important cultural context for understanding the region beyond its archaeological monuments.
  • Return to Puno: After exploring Sillustani and enjoying the views over Lake Umayo, we begin our return journey to Puno.
  • The half-day experience concludes with a deeper appreciation of the ancient societies that inhabited the Altiplano and the remarkable landscapes they chose for their sacred and funerary traditions.
