Itinerary

Sillar Route – The stone that built the White City
  • Arequipa – The Journey Begins: We begin our experience in Arequipa and head toward the northern outskirts of the city, where the landscape gradually changes from urban streets to dry volcanic terrain.
  • As we travel, our guide will introduce us to the geological origins of sillar and explain why this volcanic stone became so important in the construction and architectural identity of Arequipa.
  • Añashuayco Quarry – Into the Sillar Canyons: Our first major stop is the Añashuayco quarry, one of the most representative areas of the Sillar Route.
  • Here, immense walls of white volcanic stone rise from the desert landscape, creating a striking natural setting. The contrast between the pale rock and the surrounding arid mountains makes the quarry particularly impressive.
  • As we walk through the area, we learn how the volcanic material was formed and how it has been extracted and used over generations.
  • The Sillar Quarries – A Tradition of Stonework: The visit allows us to understand the traditional process behind the production of sillar.
  • Local stoneworkers, known as canteros, have developed techniques for cutting, shaping and finishing the volcanic material. Their work requires experience, precision and a detailed understanding of the stone.
  • Our guide will explain how these techniques have been passed down through generations and how the work of the quarry workers contributed to the construction of Arequipa's historic buildings.
  • Canteras de Culebrillas – Volcanic Art and Ancient Traces: We continue toward the Culebrillas quarries, where the landscape becomes narrower and more dramatic.
  • The natural walls of the canyon create an impressive corridor of volcanic stone. Along the route, visitors can observe carved surfaces and examples of the work developed by local artisans.
  • One of the highlights is the presence of carved figures and artistic representations within the stone walls, demonstrating how the quarries became not only places of extraction but also spaces where local craftsmanship could be expressed.
  • The Volcanic Landscape – Where Geology Meets Culture: Beyond the quarries themselves, the journey offers an opportunity to appreciate the geological landscape surrounding Arequipa.
  • The dry terrain, volcanic formations and distant mountains help explain the natural origins of the material that became so important to the city.
  • The experience connects two seemingly different worlds: the power of volcanic activity and the creativity of human craftsmanship.
  • Return to Arequipa: After exploring the quarries and learning about the history of sillar, we begin our return journey to Arequipa.
  • As we approach the city, the white façades and historic buildings take on a different meaning. After seeing where the stone comes from and how it is worked, it becomes easier to appreciate why sillar is so deeply connected to Arequipa's identity.
