Some landscapes look as if they were painted by nature itself. Vinicunca, better known as Rainbow Mountain, is one of those extraordinary places. High in the Andes, layers of minerals have created natural shades of red, green, yellow, and ochre across the mountainside, transforming the landscape into one of the most remarkable sights near Cusco.

This experience has been designed for travelers who want to discover one of the most iconic natural landscapes of the Peruvian Andes while enjoying the impressive scenery of high-altitude mountains, traditional communities, and herds of alpacas and llamas along the route.

The journey to Vinicunca is not only about reaching the famous viewpoint. It is an opportunity to experience the dramatic Andean landscape, challenge yourself at high altitude, and discover a remote part of the Cusco region where nature remains the main attraction.

Itinerary

Rainbow mountain Vinicunca – A journey above the clouds

Cusco – The Journey Begins: We will begin our experience with an early departure from Cusco, traveling through the Andean countryside toward the district of Cusipata.
As the city disappears behind us, the landscape gradually changes. Valleys, mountain communities, agricultural fields, and high-altitude scenery accompany us along the journey.
We will make a stop along the route to enjoy breakfast before continuing toward the starting point of our hike.
Phulawasipata – Beginning of the Hike: Upon arrival at Phulawasipata, we will begin our hike toward Rainbow Mountain.
The trail takes us through the impressive landscapes of the high Andes, where the air becomes thinner and the surrounding mountains grow increasingly dramatic. Along the way, we may encounter local herders and alpacas and llamas grazing freely in their natural environment.
The hike requires a steady pace due to the altitude, so we recommend walking slowly and taking short breaks whenever necessary.
Vinicunca – The Rainbow Mountain: After completing the hike, we will reach the viewpoint of Vinicunca, located at approximately 5,200 meters (17,060 feet) above sea level.
From here, we will have an extraordinary panoramic view of the colorful mountain and the surrounding Andean peaks. The different mineral layers create the characteristic shades that have made Vinicunca one of the most recognizable landscapes in Peru.
We will have time to enjoy the scenery, take photographs, and appreciate the vastness of the Andes before beginning our return journey.
Return to Cusco: We will descend along the same route toward Phulawasipata, where our transportation will be waiting for us.
Before returning to Cusco, we will stop for lunch and have time to rest after the hike.
We will then continue our journey back to Cusco, arriving in the city in the afternoon.
