Paracas & Ballestas Islands – Where the desert meets the ocean

Description

Full day
Lima, Peru

In Peru, the desert does not always end where the ocean begins. Along the southern coast, these two worlds meet to create a landscape where golden cliffs, Pacific waters and abundant marine life exist side by side.

This journey takes us from Lima to Paracas, one of Peru’s most remarkable coastal destinations, and then onto the waters surrounding the Ballestas Islands. Here, thousands of seabirds, sea lions and other marine species inhabit rocky islands shaped by the power of the Pacific Ocean.

Itinerary

Paracas & Ballestas Islands – Where the desert meets the ocean
  • Lima – The Journey Begins: Our experience begins in Lima with an early departure toward the southern coast. As we leave the capital behind, the urban landscape gradually gives way to the vast coastal desert.
  • During the journey, our guide will introduce us to the geography and history of the Paracas region and explain the importance of its marine ecosystem.
  • Paracas – Gateway to the Pacific: Upon arriving in Paracas, we head toward the port where our boat excursion to the Ballestas Islands begins.
  • Paracas is known for the extraordinary contrast between its desert landscapes and the Pacific Ocean. The area has been shaped by wind, water and geological processes, creating dramatic coastal scenery that makes the region one of the most distinctive destinations in southern Peru.
  • Ballestas Islands – A Sanctuary of Marine Life: We board a boat and begin our journey across the Pacific toward the Ballestas Islands.
  • As we approach the islands, the landscape changes dramatically. Rocky formations rise from the ocean and become resting and nesting places for a remarkable variety of marine birds.
  • During the excursion, we can observe species such as sea lions, Humboldt penguins and numerous seabirds. Depending on the season and natural conditions, the waters around the islands may also offer opportunities to observe other marine wildlife.
  • Our guide will provide information about the ecosystem and the importance of protecting this fragile marine environment.
  • The Candelabra of Paracas – A Giant Figure in the Desert: During the boat ride, we also have the opportunity to observe the famous Candelabra of Paracas, a large geoglyph carved into the coastal desert cliffs.
  • The figure can be seen from the sea and remains one of the region’s most intriguing archaeological features. Its exact origin and purpose continue to be discussed, adding another layer of mystery to the Paracas landscape.
  • From the boat, the contrast between the immense desert cliff and the Pacific Ocean creates a memorable view.
  • Return to Paracas – Coastal Landscapes: After exploring the Ballestas Islands, we return by boat to the port of Paracas.
  • The return journey offers another opportunity to appreciate the coastline, its cliffs and the open Pacific landscape. Once back on land, we have time to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of Paracas before continuing with the day's experience.
  • Return to Lima: After completing our visit to Paracas and the Ballestas Islands, we begin our journey back to Lima.
  • The experience combines archaeology, marine wildlife and dramatic coastal landscapes, offering a different perspective on Peru beyond its mountains and ancient Andean cities.
