Humantay Lake – A turquoise jewel in the Andes

Description

Full day
Cusco, Peru

Hidden among the imposing mountains of the Peruvian Andes, Humantay Lake appears like a turquoise mirror surrounded by snow-capped peaks. Its intense color, created by the glacial waters descending from the Humantay Mountain, makes this one of the most striking natural landscapes near Cusco.

This experience has been designed for travelers looking to explore the high Andes and discover one of its most beautiful glacial lakes. The journey combines spectacular mountain scenery, an adventurous hike, and a close encounter with a landscape that has long been considered sacred by Andean communities.

The route to Humantay Lake is a rewarding challenge. Although the hike is relatively short, the altitude makes it important to maintain a comfortable pace and allow enough time to enjoy the journey.

Itinerary

Humantay Lake – A turquoise jewel in the Andes
  • Cusco – The Journey Begins: We will begin our experience with an early departure from Cusco, traveling through the Andean countryside toward the district of Mollepata.
  • As we leave the city behind, the landscape gradually changes, revealing small villages, agricultural fields, deep valleys, and impressive mountain scenery.
  • We will make a stop along the route for breakfast before continuing toward Soraypampa, the starting point of our hike.
  • Soraypampa – Beginning of the Hike: Upon arrival at Soraypampa, located at approximately 3,900 meters (12,795 feet) above sea level, we will begin our hike toward Humantay Lake.
  • The trail gradually climbs through the high Andean landscape, with views of surrounding mountains accompanying us throughout the journey. The altitude can make the hike physically demanding, so we will maintain a steady pace and take short breaks when necessary.
  • For travelers who prefer not to complete the entire route on foot, horse rental may be available locally, subject to availability and additional payment.
  • Humantay Lake – A Turquoise Jewel: After approximately one and a half to two hours of hiking, depending on the pace, we will reach Humantay Lake.
  • The first view of the lake is one of the highlights of the experience. Its turquoise waters contrast beautifully with the rocky slopes and the snow-covered peaks of the surrounding mountains.
  • We will have time to rest, take photographs, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this spectacular Andean landscape. Our guide will also share information about the cultural and spiritual importance of the mountains and lakes within the Andean worldview.
  • Return to Soraypampa: After enjoying the lake, we will begin our descent toward Soraypampa.
  • The return journey is generally easier than the ascent, allowing us to appreciate the surrounding scenery from a different perspective.
  • Once we arrive at Soraypampa, our transportation will be waiting for us. We will then continue to a local restaurant for lunch before beginning our return journey to Cusco.
  • Return to Cusco: After lunch and some time to rest, we will continue our journey through the Andean valleys toward Cusco.
  • We will arrive in the city in the afternoon, concluding an unforgettable day surrounded by some of the most impressive landscapes of the Peruvian Andes.
