Sacred Valley of Cusco – The valley where the Incas found harmony

Description

Full day
Cusco, Peru

There are places where history seems to follow the landscape, and the Sacred Valley is one of them. Surrounded by impressive mountains and shaped by the Vilcanota River, this fertile valley was much more than an agricultural region for the Incas. It was a place where nature, spirituality, agriculture, and Inca engineering came together.

This tour has been designed for travelers who want to discover the cultural and natural richness of the Sacred Valley while visiting some of its most important archaeological and traditional sites. Throughout the journey, you will discover ancient Inca terraces, impressive archaeological complexes, traditional villages, and landscapes that continue to preserve the spirit of the Andes.

The Sacred Valley is also an excellent opportunity to understand the importance of agriculture and natural resources within the Inca civilization, while experiencing the living traditions of the communities that inhabit this region.

Itinerary

Sacred Valley of Cusco – The valley where the Incas found harmony
  • Chinchero – A Living Andean Tradition: Our experience begins in Chinchero, a traditional Andean town located high in the mountains of the Sacred Valley. This place is known for its strong connection to ancestral traditions, colorful textiles, and agricultural heritage.
  • During our visit, we will have the opportunity to learn about traditional weaving techniques and the natural dyes used to create the characteristic colors of Andean textiles. We will also explore the archaeological remains of Chinchero, where Inca terraces and stone structures coexist with colonial architecture.
  • Moray – The Inca Agricultural Laboratory: We continue toward Moray, one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in the Sacred Valley.
  • Its enormous circular terraces descend into the earth, creating a unique landscape that continues to inspire curiosity. The Incas used this area for agricultural experimentation, taking advantage of the different temperatures and microclimates created at each level.
  • Walking around Moray allows us to appreciate the sophisticated relationship between the Incas and their environment.
  • Maras – The Ancient Salt Mines: Our journey continues to the famous salt mines of Maras, where thousands of small pools spread across the mountainside create an extraordinary landscape.
  • Salt has been extracted from these natural saltwater springs for centuries. The water flows through a carefully designed network of channels, filling the pools where the water gradually evaporates and leaves behind layers of salt.
  • The combination of traditional techniques, natural surroundings, and the spectacular mountain scenery makes Maras one of the most memorable stops in the Sacred Valley.
  • Ollantaytambo – The Living Inca City: We then travel to Ollantaytambo, one of the most important archaeological sites in the region and one of the best-preserved examples of Inca urban planning.
  • Its impressive terraces rise along the mountainside, while its enormous stone structures reveal the extraordinary precision of Inca engineering. The town itself still preserves much of its original Inca layout, making it possible to walk through streets that have been used for centuries.
  • Ollantaytambo was also an important ceremonial, agricultural, and strategic center, and its location played a significant role in the history of the Inca Empire.
  • After completing our visit, we will continue according to the selected tour option or return to Cusco.
