7 Lakes of Ausangate – A journey through the high Andes
Description
Far beyond the most visited landscapes of Cusco lies a world of turquoise waters, rugged mountains, and untouched Andean scenery. At the foot of the majestic Ausangate Mountain, a collection of high-altitude lagoons reflects the changing colors of the sky and surrounding peaks, creating one of the most impressive landscapes in southern Peru.
The 7 Lakes of Ausangate experience is an opportunity to explore this remote corner of the Andes and discover a landscape where nature and Andean traditions remain deeply connected. Along the route, we will encounter colorful lagoons, imposing mountains, traditional communities, and herds of alpacas and llamas moving freely through the highlands.
This experience is ideal for travelers looking for a more adventurous day in the Andes, away from the busiest tourist routes and surrounded by spectacular high-altitude scenery.
Itinerary
- Cusco – The Journey Begins: We will begin our experience with an early departure from Cusco, traveling south through the Andean landscapes toward the district of Ocongate.
- As we leave the city behind, the scenery gradually transforms into wide valleys, traditional communities, agricultural fields, and increasingly imposing mountains. We will continue toward the community of Pacchanta, located near the Ausangate mountain range.
- Along the way, we will make a stop for breakfast before continuing toward the starting point of our hike.
- Pacchanta – Beginning of the Hike: Upon arrival in Pacchanta, we will prepare for our hike through the highlands surrounding Ausangate.
- The route takes us through a spectacular natural environment, where the mountains rise dramatically around us and alpacas and llamas can often be seen grazing along the trail.
- Due to the altitude, the walk can be physically demanding, so we will maintain a steady pace and take breaks whenever necessary.
- The 7 Lakes of Ausangate – A Landscape of Colors: As we continue along the route, we will begin discovering the beautiful lagoons scattered throughout the Ausangate mountain range.
- Each lagoon has its own particular color and character. Depending on the mineral composition, sunlight, weather conditions, and surrounding landscape, the waters can appear in shades of turquoise, deep blue, green, or even darker tones.
- The combination of the colorful lagoons, snow-capped peaks, and vast Andean valleys creates an extraordinary panorama.
- Throughout the hike, we will have time to stop at different viewpoints, enjoy the scenery, and capture photographs of the surrounding mountains and lagoons.
- Ausangate Mountain – The Sacred Mountain: Throughout the experience, the imposing presence of Ausangate Mountain accompanies our journey.
- For Andean communities, Ausangate is considered an important sacred mountain, deeply connected to local traditions and beliefs. Its presence dominates the landscape and provides a remarkable backdrop to the entire experience.
- The surrounding environment also offers the opportunity to observe traditional Andean life, including local herders and animals adapted to the high-altitude environment.
- Pacchanta – Andean Hot Springs: After completing the hike, we will return to Pacchanta, where we will have time to enjoy the natural hot springs.
- Surrounded by mountains, these thermal waters offer a relaxing way to end the day's adventure and rest after the hike.
- We will then enjoy lunch in the community before beginning our journey back to Cusco.
- Return to Cusco: After lunch and some time to rest, we will begin our return journey through the Andean highlands.
- We will arrive in Cusco in the afternoon or evening, depending on weather and road conditions, concluding a day filled with spectacular landscapes and an authentic experience in the high Andes.
